Happy New Year & what's to come in 2012...

SQUARE ONE events have been a labor of love since started in 2008. I remember meeting the artists and performers, who have become very near and dear to me, for the very first time. A lot of wonderful memories have been made and it seems like I have been nonstop busy since those first days.

With the growing popularity of our two annual events, 2011 saw our very first two-night event with this past November's COSMOPOLITAN. It's always been said that it's better to go out while on top then to fizzle away. And with that said, I've decided to take a break with SQUARE ONE events in 2012 while on top and at my strongest.

No, this is not the very end of SQUARE ONE events altogether. I will be helping out with the 15th Anniversary of Festa Italiana (March 29 to April 1, 2012) and Pride & Passion at the Tampa Museum of Art (May 19, 2012), and hope to come back reenergized this fall.

I want to personally THANK every single one of you for the continuous and endless support throughout the years! I look forward to staying in touch with you all.

SQUARE ONE’S 4TH ANNUAL FALL CREATIVE EVENT 2011 EXPANDS TO TWO NIGHTS

Square One’s 4th Annual Fall Creative Event called COSMOPOLITAN expands to two nights, taking place with an Art Walk Preview on Friday, November 18, 2011 and continuing with the main event on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

On Friday, November 18, 2011 from 7pm to 11pm, Square One will host an Art Walk preview at The RITZ Ybor and multiple Ybor City-based venues including The Bricks, Ybor Art Colony, The Stone Soup Company, Collage Ybor, Singing Stone, Tre Amici @ The Bunker, Hoffman Porgues Gallery and Sunday’s Fine Dining. More than 75 local artists will be on display at The RITZ Ybor alone, while other participating venues will debut new art shows and exhibits.

On Saturday, November 19, 2011, Square One will present their 4rd Annual Fall 2011 and 8th Square One Creative Event called COSMOPOLITAN. The RITZ Ybor will once again be home to the art, music, dance and fashion extravaganza that will feature 75 local artists along with live performances from over 40 musicians, dancers, models and performers. COSMOPOLITAN will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Fund (PCF). More than 2,500 attendees are expected at both nights of COSMOPOLITAN.

Each Square One Creative Event revolves around a selected theme. Artists and performers are encouraged to present their work based on the chosen theme which involves specific concepts, colors and subject matter. Audiences are allowed to participate at the event by incorporating the event theme elements into their wardrobe and attire.

The theme of COSMOPOLITAN revolves around a traveling, around-the-world, international theme. Audiences will be encouraged to incorporate the theme colors into their attire by wearing the colors red, white and blue at the event.

COSMOPOLITAN, a Square One Creative Event, is open to the general public of all ages.

Admission to the Art Walk preview at all participating locations on Friday, November 18, 2011 is free and open to all ages.

At the main event taking place from 7pm to midnight on Saturday, November 19, 2011, there will be a $5.00 suggested donation at the door with a portion of those donations benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Fund (PCF).

Live performances by VYB Dance Company, Blake High School, American Racket, contemporary dancer Gina Menichino, singers Jeremy Gloff, Anye Cole and Teagan Kipi, bands The James-Lange Theory, On Carlton Row and Dropin Pickup with a debut fashion show by local designer Ricky Lindsay will take place at the event.

This Thursday, October 13, 2011, check out the Postmodern Cocktail Experience from our friends at the Philanthropic Young Tampa Bay (PYT) at the historic Roosevelt 2.0 located at 1812 North 15th Street in Tampa, Florida.

Guests will be treated to an open bar consisting of a groundbreaking molecular mixology menu that includes examples of spherification, solidification and classic cocktails on themes of fire and ice. SQUARE ONE chose to highlight author Nicolas G. Janovsky for this month's spotlight edition. Nicolas is a first-time author whose debut non-fiction book, titled Gay: A New Path Forward, is being released on Sunday, October 16, 2011 with an Official Book Release Party at Collage Ybor in Tampa, Florida on the same evening. I sat down with Nick recently for a lil' Q&A.

Okesene Tilo: Hello Nick. Thank you for taking time to sit down with me for this month's Square One Spotlight. Could you describe your book Gay: A New Path Forward and the reasons why you wrote it?

Nicolas Janovsky: My goal is to enlighten non-Gays by offering them ways to talk to and about Gays in their lives. Through this I aim to put an end to the stereotyping that plagues everyday language and society and that sets Gays apart from the rest of humanity. Also creating better family and working environments for Gays. If society could talk about Gays the way they talk about race, non-Gays would soon discover that their Gay friends and family members were just like them. If we can achieve this I believe all individuals would be noted as different in the same manner that people are short, tall, white, black, smart but not otherwise different just because of their sexuality.

OT: What qualifies you as an author to write a book on gay life?

NJ: From the time I was in elementary school I knew that I was Gay. In living with this knowledge my whole life I have worked for years to organize my words and thoughts into a book that could explain to my friends, coworkers and peers that being Gay isn’t a choice. Further I sought the counsel of those whom I speak about and gained their perspective and insight.

From my own wealth of experiences and successes combined with the insight and unique experiences of close friends from their educational achievements, professional advancement and family dynamics. Their life stories combined with my ideas, thoughts, gradients and systems allowed me to create a whole and complete project.

OT: With the book being 104+ pages, do you ever feel that the book could've been and/or should've been longer to fully express your view?

NJ: Well actually the book is published as 132 pages. There is a plethora of information, details, new knowledge and real life experiences within these 132 pages. I wanted my book to be direct, concise and not watered down with frivolous writings.

As one reviewer stated: “I am also amazed that Janovsky was able to put so much information into just over 100 pages. But those hundred pages can make a big difference in many lives. There is a section on gay terms or a gay glossary and I learned something here myself—I know what a squirrel was but its meaning has changed and I have never heard of Gay Death being at age 30 but I guess we are never too old to learn.”

OT: Do you think having the word "Gay" in big, bold red letters will distract any of your target audience from purchasing the book or reading it in public?

NJ: I was quite nervous about this and I have an introductory paragraph on this. I had a deep-rooted feeling of nervousness that those close to me may shy away from the book because the title turned them off. Further people may be nervous about reading the book or carrying it around in public with big red letters screaming GAY! I knew if I gave into this I would be surrendering to all that which I wish to eradicate from society though this text.

OT: It's inevitable for the topics that your book covers NOT to receive nay saying from other groups who do not agree with your views, what do you say to those groups? How are you hoping to persuade them to your side?

NJ: By giving insight to my life, using practical language, going step by step through gay life, gay culture, family relationships, professional ways of existence, confronting stereotypes, giving supporting verbiage from others, their unique experiences and comparing each of these with supporting information the readers can choose to work for a more equal and accepting society. It is my sincerest hope they do.

OT: So now that you've wrapped up your first book and with your book release party and book release date just a mere days away, what's next on your goals for the end of this year and next year?

NJ: Complete the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60-mile walk for breast cancer for my third consecutive & final year, continue volunteering for causes near to my heart, complete numerous speaking and book signing events to spread the knowledge within my book far and wide while working to gain better acceptance for all in society by activism and using my voice.

Gay: A New Path Forward will be released on October 16, 2011 on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, and eBook compatible for Kindle.

The official book release party with author signing & a performance by Jeremy Gloff will take place at Collage Ybor located at 1701 East 8th Avenue in Tampa, Florida starting at 5:30pm.

Ettison came a very close second with their rendition of "Suspicious Minds," while Last Minute Stars ("Devil In Disguise"), Spark Notes ("Jailhouse Rock") and Ars Nova ("A Little Less Conversation") gave everyone a run for their money. The audience enthusiastically cheered on Stalling Dawn who did a rocking version of Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," the Diamond Dolls who performed a dark, electro-synth version of "Piece of Me" and Curbside Goodbye who did a metal rendition of Brit's "Toxic." In the end, it was both The James-Lange Theory with their medley of "Toxic" and "Baby One More Time" and Next Of Kin with their bluesy, funk version of "Oops! I Did It Again" who stumped the judges with their hundreds of cheering fans, who in the end ultimately declared a tie and a victory for both bands.

The James-Lange Theory and Next Of Kin will advance to the August 19 ULTIMATE Finals where they join Week 1 winners The Reverie and Week 2 winners The Ken Apperson Band.

The Kanvas Showcasing the Best of Tampa’s Urban Arts:

Once again, VYB is bringing the area’s best hip hop crews and dance choreographers together on the main stage at The RITZ Ybor. This time, the showcase will include crews from all over Florida.

The stage is our canvas,” says DeMario Henry, VYB’s founder, “it’s where we leave our mark.” The Kanvas was created as a platform for young professionals to express themselves and for an audience to experience and embrace dance culture. What started as a small showcase in a studio setting has grown to an evening length event attracting talent from all over Florida.With so much response from local and regional choreographers and dance crews, VYB has decided to implement an invite only selection process. Below is the details to send your videos to become selected.

All Dance Pieces must be no longer than 5min.

There will be an on-stage rehearsal the week of the show for you to do run through your piece with lighting, sound, and whatever else you feel you need to do an amazing show. Your allotted time will be 15min. max. Please respect this time constraint so that we can get everyone a chance to be onstage.

We are encouraging you to bring video cameras and cameras this year. Videotaping is allowed.

SQUARE ONE chose to highlight the upcoming Pride & Passion event for this spotlight edition. Pride & Passion is an annual fundraising event for the Tampa Museum of Art and the official kickoff event for St. Pete Pride. We sat down with Jose Garboza, a member of the event's steering committee, for a Q&A.

OKIE TILO: Hello Jose. How long have you been involved with Pride & Passion, and why?

JOSE GARBOZA: This is my second year involved with the event, and my first year on the steering committee. I got involved with Pride & Passion because it is for a great cause: the GLBT community in Tampa supporting the arts and the new fantastic venue downtown.

OKIE: So is Pride & Passion strictly a GLBT event?

JOSE: No, Pride & Passion is an event organized for the GLBT community AND anyone who supports the arts. We are very welcoming of anyone.

OKIE: What makes this fundraising event stand out among the others?

JOSE: Pride & Passion is more than just a fundraiser and a way to support art in our community. We are truly creating a unique experience by not only showcasing some of the best food from local restaurants, but also by transforming the atrium of the Tampa Museum of Art (TMA) into a performance art space. The concept of the entertainment for the night revolves around Degas' art, currently on exhibit at TMA. Degas was fascinated with dancing and movement as seen in his famous ballerine statues. We have been working with the Bella Danza dance collective for months to create unique performance pieces that evoke a modern version of Degas' inspiration. You will be able to see these pieces throughout the night among other surprises.

OKIE: Tickets for Pride & Passion are $75.00 each, what do you say to those who wish to attend but are uneasy with the admission cost?

Return to Wonderland: April 29, 2011

Return to Wonderland, Barkin HeARTS's 2nd installment of their Wonderland-themed art-fashion-dance extravaganza took place last Friday night at The Heights in Tampa, Florida. Since their inception last year, founder Johnna Guzman and her counterparts have raised nearly $10,000 for local pet rescues. This year's production made it possible for Barkin HeARTS to file for their 501(c)3 which will allow them to continue working closer with sponsors, other charities and more artists.

While more than 700 people have attended the Wonderland events, Johnna Guzman and her team look forward to new endeavors: a winter event and their long-awaited Halloween Haunted Heights event.

On Monday, May 9, 2011 Square One will present THIS, an album release party of the same name for local musician Jeremy Gloff at the Ybor Social located at 1909 North 15th Street in the historic Ybor City district of Tampa, Florida. The event will feature live performances of select songs from THIS with guest performers Shunda K (formerly of Yo Majesty), songstress Anye Cole' and local personality MACAViTi. Guests will be able to purchase the album for $5. Doors open at 9pm and the event will conclude at midnight. Admission to the event is free and open to patrons aged 18 and up.

THIS, Jeremy Gloff's 17th album will be released on Crunks Not Dead Records and will be available on iTunes and Amazon.com. The new album finds Jeremy Gloff's return to the pop dance sound of his 1987 album while mixing in the emotional gloss of his previous album, 21st Century Love Songs. Recording for THIS began in December 2010 at Atomic Audio Studios. All songs were written by Jeremy Gloff and produced by Jeremy Gloff and Mark Nikolich. Co-writers on select songs include Okesene Tilo, Shadrick Ferrer, Pat Maue, Sena Alborzian, MACAViTi, Shunda K and Geoffrey Dicker.

The title, THIS, is a succinct and definitive summation of the free-spirit and boldness of the album and artist.

For this month's spotlight, SQUARE ONE chose Johnna Guzman who will be producing the second installment of her Barkin heARTS charity event, Return to Wonderland, on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the The Heights Trolley Barn in Tampa, Florida. Okesene Tilo recently sat down with Johnna for a Q&A for this month's Spotlight.

OKIE TILO: Hello Johnna. Congratulations on your second year doing another Barkin heARTS Wonderland-themed event. What differences can we expect at this event versus last year's?

JOHNNA GUZMAN: This year's show will be more edgy and structured much differently than last year's. We have experimented with new mediums and integrated some new elements into performances. I didn't hand lay the stage this year, so we've made some upgrades to the way we are going to present the talent and art. There's surprises inside and out and a whole lot more interaction with guests. There are a few visual installations that are really unique and unexpected in the space that I'm really excited about as well as some performers that are trying new things themselves that haven't been seen at other shows. We were donated, by Creative Night Clubs out of Orlando, some very innovative products that we're using this year as well as recycled billboards from Clear Channel Outdoors. These are definitely new elements that we're mixing in and they're a challenge to install. I'm really loving the jello shot bar and the custom top hats you'll be able to take pictures with. And of course the Paper mache mushrooms!

OKIE: What is it about Wonderland that fascinates you and that fascinates your guests?

JOHNNA: I wasn't ready to give it up! We wanted to give one last tribute to Alice and invite guests that missed last year to celebrate with us for a good cause. I'm fascinated by the philosophy behind Alice in Wonderland: the political connotations at the Mad Hatters tea party where all the people in charge are purposely being confusing, and the theme of finding yourself in a mixed up, backwards world that doesn't make sense. I actually read Alice in Wonderland Philosophy by William Irwin and edited by Richard Brian Davis. They discuss some very interesting topics like nuclear strategists (The Red Queen) and drugs, dreams and perceptions. never staying in the present with jam yesterday, jam tomorrow but never today... who knew that this was talking about procrastination? Alice's journey was different than any other story book princess's journey. She was more curious, bold, made mistakes and was viewed as stupid and unruly. This theme is huge for anyone who challenges the norm and tries to be different. You will face tons of opposition and trials. I think many people can still relate to this growing up experience, it's been a huge personal journey for me over the last few years and I felt still very connected to the Wonderland theme.

Expanding on that we wanted everyone to show us what their Wonderland is to them. Artists show us their Wonderland in every piece of work they do and you can really experience the people around you at an event like this. Some people forget what their Wonderland is and get caught up in everyday life. This event was created for people to come explore, have fun and not forget. The audience I think is prepared for out of the box ideas and concepts and it's an excuse to bring out the child at heart. Even if you're not obsessed with Alice in Wonderland Philosophy, you're curious about what the madness is about. My production team would take my book away, but I have it downloaded on my phone!

OKIE: How do you select the artists and performers for your event?

JOHNNA: I go to your Square One shows and recruit! (laughter) We always invite artists from other shows because we're all friends in this art community. We look for people who can be really flexible. Sometimes I go to them and say, "Can you do this crazy idea with your amazing art?" and they normally look at me like I'm crazy and then I tell them we're going to hang it upside down. Our location allows us to have some artists that can't do their art at certain venues, so we've found some new talent in being able to showcase this type of art. The artists are encouraged to think out of the square with their displays and come up with new ideas so you'll never see them again like this. Hendrickje Ewen, my partner in crime and co-producer, has years of experience with performers from her line of work. They are all really good friends and from this, the show takes on a life of it's self. Now that we've started we have people contact us and it's been tons of fun and a great experience. I don't know if we select as much as the show creates itself.

OKIE: Your event is $25 to attend. In a time of economic recession, what do you say to those who wish to attend but balk at the admission price?

JOHNNA: I don't take part in the recession. I don't believe we should stop giving or stop having fun. The foundations that we use our talents to raise money for don't get a break because of the recession. The SPCA TAMPA BAY is non-government funded and needs 2.5 million dollars a year to serve over 15,000 animals in just Tampa Bay alone. If anything during this "recession," they need more help because people aren't keeping their pets and they aren't donating. This event was created for guests to have fun for a good cause and support all the local artists. Over half your ticket price goes to the SPCA Tampa Bay and everything you drink, eat or purchase at the event supports a local rescue. We face several challenges at our venue like lighting and bar setup and product purchase that other venues already have everyday. It's something special that we have to build from the ground up and it's considerably more expensive to operate the way we would like to. I'm broke too so I know the feeling, but we have to do for what we love, for the causes that we love and I want to see everyone smile and have fun. I'll personally do whatever it takes to put into the show to save some of our furry friends. I hope that people realize their 20 dollars to get in helps us raise $1.000's for the charities and keeps us being able to do what we love for our guests.

JOHNNA: A Halloween Event! (laughing) I'm just getting my feet wet. Compared to you, I feel like a baby at this and I'm excited that we were able to create something for you to talk about. I'm experimenting with everything we do and learning. I'm moved by the people that are in the shows and the people that come to the shows. I know the team would really like to see our Halloween show happen this year. The production and theatricals that Hendrickje and I worked on will knock your socks off. So you'll definitely see some more movie-making action as we travel down that road. I loved working with the director Art Hearl and we will collaborate again with our video Editor Jim Webb. You can still watch last year's trailer on YouTube, just search "Haunted Heights Tampa." Movie editing and lighting production are really exciting to me now so we'll see what happens with that. There's also some collaborations with some other executive producers that have been discussed (wink wink), so there are exciting things in my future with some amazing people. You can guarantee that it will all be for a good cause. I'd really like to start dancing again and performing. Who knows! That's part of the excitement.

OKIE: Well thank you for sitting down with me and talking about your event. I'm sure all of your hard work and dedication will make this year's Wonderland event yet another Barkin HeARTS success. Any other last words that you would like to share?

JOHNNA: I'm really, really grateful for the people that have touched my life and gone out of their way to do these shows with us. It's time consuming. It's not easy and I'm amazed at what we've accomplished. Those people, who are mostly volunteers, believe in the event and the cause and love their work. Nothing would happen without them. The sponsors of this event Puff-n-Stuff, Miller Lite, Visual Delights, The New Barker, Clear Channel Outdoors, The Roosevelt 2.0, Bella Dog Magazine, Bay Stage Lighting, King James & the Sundrummers, Impulse Pole Dance, Enigma Dance Kru, Hula Monsters... I mean this list just goes on and on. Just look at our Facebook. They really pull through for this event and I'm honored to work with them. They are the backbone for turning on the lights and every other moving part. Thank you for making our dreams come true and for helping us raise money for the SPCA Tampa Bay.

It's such a challenge to do these shows and we barely have marketing money so the people that show up really make the difference. Whether 2 people show up or 300 people show up., we will still work just as hard to raise money for the SPCA and never give up. We love what we do and I thank you Okie for your support, inspiration and dedication to the art community.

“It’s fitting that tonight’s event falls on April Fools Day weekend, because tonight’s Square One event called Man On The Moon is an exploration of history vs. fiction. Did that really happen? How do you know that really happened? Did he really say that? How do you know he really said that? Is the joke on us?

Napoleon Bonaparte once said: History is the version of past events that individuals have decided to agree upon… or did he say that?

On July 20, 1969, an estimated 500 million individuals witnessed the historic lunar landing of the first man on the moon. History tells us that a human being first stepped on the moon’s surface on that date, but… did Neil Armstrong really step onto the stage of a moon set piece in a studio?

John Maynard Keyes once said: Ideas shape the course of history… or did he?

On August 5, 1962, a movie star was found dead in her Hollywood home. History documents the movie star ingesting 50 pills in one gulp without water as part of a suicidal overdose, but… was Marilyn Monroe a victim in covering up a President’s meanderings?

Sarah Palin once said: I don’t know much about history. Actually, I don’t know anything about history, but I can see Russia from my house… or did she say that?

Throughout time, sightings of Bigfoot, the Lochness Monster and other mysterious creatures have been reported. More recently, the discovery and existence of a new mysterious creature has made national headlines for his powers of invincibility and extraordinary strength. Does the existence of this new creature give credibility to the other sightings of the other creatures throughout history, or… is Charlie Sheen truly a human being with tiger blood in his DNA?

Again, is the joke on us? Or have we always been in on the joke? History is fiction.”

For those of you who do not yet know, the Tampa Artist Emporium will be closing when our lease expires on Friday, December 31. I've been trying like mad the last few months to negotiate a new lease, but our current landlord is unable to work with us. So, we are letting our lease expire and will be closing at the end of the year. However, I am working on finding a new location in the same area with better exposure and foot traffic and am hoping to reopen in a month or two. I will definitely keep you updated on the progress and would love to have you continue to be a part of the gallery. I just wanted to let you know what was going on so you heard it directly from me and so you also know that this is not the end. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am super excited to start from scratch and work with Shelby to resurrect our "Phoenix" from the ashes!

For this month's spotlight, SQUARE ONE chose Jose Renteria who will be showcasing his collection at ANTHOLOGY, his very first artist solo-exhibit on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Tre Amici @ The Bunker in Ybor City. Jose is the second artist since photographer Ryan Prado to receive a solo-exhibit event sponsorship from SQUARE ONE. Okesene Tilo recently sat down with Jose for a Q&A for this month's Spotlight.

OKIE TILO: Hey there Jose! First off, congratulations on your upcoming ANTHOLOGY exhibit. To familiarize yourself with those unfamiliar with your collection of work, what type of artist would you describe yourself as?

JOSE RENTERIA: I would describe myself as a multi-faceted artist in the fact that I work not only with acrylics, but also with makeup and graphic design. These are three very different yet similar art forms.

TILO: Do you feel there is one medium that you are strongest?

RENTERIA: I have always been more drawn to acrylics. I like that they are easy to work with and allow me to use them however I want.

TILO: This is your very first solo exhibit, why did you feel now was the time to have one?

RENTERIA: Yes it is! I am completely excited about it. The idea came up when several of my friends asked me when I was going to have a solo exhibit. They said people needed to see my work and that it should not be shoved under my couch, so I decided that it was time to do just that.

TILO: Who or what are you artistic inspirations?

RENTERIA: I am inspired by my mood and what ever part of life I am going through. My work definitely reflects that. There are some pieces that are dark, some are full of fire, and others are calm, some are even comedic.

TILO: What local artists do you admire?

RENTERIA: Ryan Prado would be one of the local artists that I find fascinating. His work is awesome and it amazes me how he can take something so simple and make it brilliant. I have had the pleasure of working with him on several occasions and the creative chemistry was ridiculous. I also love the work of Mark De Los Reyes. Even though he is not your typical artist, he does magic with makeup brushes.

TILO: Do you feel the local art community is thriving and growing?

RENTERIA: I feel that the local art community if finally flourishing the way it should be. I believe that everyone has the ability to be artistic and events such as the ones sponsored by Square One are allowing people to do that. New artists are emerging, seasoned artists are getting back into the game and allowing the community to experience different generations of art.

TILO: What are some of your favorite local events that you look forward to?

RENTERIA: Of course the Square One events in spring and fall. I have been fortunate to be part of these events and I am thankful that because of Square One's GO! event in 2008, I was able to reimurse myself into art.

TILO: You are also an integral part of producing the annual events that benefit the MAC AIDS Fund, can you tell me more about this year's event?

RENTERIA: Yes. I have worked for MAC Cosmetics for 5 years now, and the MAC AIDS Fund is the heart and soul of each artist. I am glad to be a part of this event. This year we are establishing the Black & White Ball, a fashion forward evening full of glamour, entertainment, cocktails, fun and of course, fabulous makeup. We are fortunate to have The Honey Pot host our event again this year and are very thankful to them for their generous hospitality. The theme is of course black and white. I guess, you'll just have to attend to find out more.

TILO: Anything else you wish to share?

RENTERIA: I am really glad to be able to share my work and essentially moments of my life with my friends, family, and the community. I am also excited about Square One's BERLIN show on November 13 and The Black & White Ball in December. This fall and winter of 2010 are going to be spectacular.

Every month, SQUARE ONE will spotlight a local creative individual and their artistic endeavors. This month, SQUARE ONE chose author and Tampa resident Billy Jolie who is set to release his debut novel, The Lust Garden on July 24, 2010. SQUARE ONE's Okesene Tilo recently sat down with the newly published author for OMG! Magazine's Q&A about his most recent accomplishment.

OKESENE TILO: First off, a huge congratulations to you for completing your very first novel. I clearly remember you first telling me about working on it nearly 4 years ago, so tell (us) readers a little about your book.

BILLY JOLIE: Thanks a lot Okie! At its heart, the book is a dramatic journey through the minds of two very extreme characters. We have Gianna Salvani, the ultimate Hollywood “It” girl, strutting her way through fame and dealing with its drawbacks. Her quest for love, acceptance, domination… and in the background of all this glitz, we get to experience the darkness of a serial killer who is obsessed with Gianna and the idea of physical metamorphosis. You’ll be dying to figure out his secret.

TILO: How did you come up with the storyline?

JOLIE: The core twist was in my head for years. The hard part was building a fantasy world around it where these characters could exist to allow the events to unfold. I’m obsessed with the idea of celebrity. Hollywood became the ideal environment. In a way, I lived vicariously through my characters. The easiest way to chase fame is to fake it till you make it.

TILO: I love the title. How did you come up with it?

JOLIE: Honestly, by mistake. I played around with a few titles in the beginning, but ultimately they didn’t work for the material. I was looking through some old photographs of a trip I took to Berlin and came across a shot I’d taken of a park sign called Lustgarten. I guess it was meant to be.

TILO: When did you start writing?

JOLIE: Ever since I can remember. It started with poems and then spiraled from there. Writing was always an escape for me, especially when I was young, gay and growing up in small town America. I actually have full-length novels buried in my closet from high school. I’d probably be scared to revisit them.

TILO: What was the hardest part to write in the book?

JOLIE: Deciding the fate of a character you’ve grown to love is always difficult. Knowing you can’t change it is even harder. Technical aspects are tricky as well. One of the characters, Zak, is British. It was challenging making his dialogue believable. Luckily, I have a wonderful friend who lives in London that I was able to draw from.

TILO: Tell us about your favorite part of the book.

JOLIE: Well… I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s an explosive interaction involving Gianna and her killer toward the end of the story. I spent the whole novel working toward this reunion of sorts, and having them together in the same room, was so artistically rewarding for me. It’s my best work.

TILO: There’s always some truth in fiction. Does any part of the story reflect your own past?

JOLIE: Definitely. There are pieces of me in every character. I think the people closest to me will be surprised at just how much of me is laced within the story. I lost my father early in my childhood. I gave Gianna the same struggle. And Blair’s gay. I use everything around me for inspiration.

TILO: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the lead?

JOLIE: I debate this constantly. Gianna is an extreme character with alternating highs and lows. She’s a bit bipolar. And the actress would have to possess vocal talent. I’m going to say Scarlett Johansson.

TILO: Who are some of your favorite authors?

JOLIE: There are too many. I grew up reading trashy novels by Jackie Collins. I hate to admit it, but she taught me a lot about sex. Bret Easton Ellis is a favorite. Anne Rice. And I’ve recently discovered Martin Millar, a British writer. I wish I had half his talent. He’s brilliantly hilarious.

TILO: Which individual has had the single greatest influence on your life?

JOLIE: My grandmother. She’s an amazing woman and the book is dedicated to her. After I came out to her, to which she was completely accepting of, I really started to live freely.

TILO: Any advice for inspiring writers?

JOLIE: Don’t talk about wanting to write… Sit down and actually do it. Love it for the creative freedom. Don’t do it for the money. And never give up, even if you’re staring at a pile of rejection letters. It’s all part of the process. It happened to me. I had an agent tell me the material was too dark and the alternating storylines would never work in commercial publishing. I need to frame that letter.

TILO: So what’s next for Mr. Jolie?

JOLIE: The future appears to be unwritten. That’s what’s so great about the life of a writer. I have an outline for a sequel waiting for me to develop, but I think I want to try something different. I’d like to get out of my comfort zone a bit and see what happens.

SQUARE ONE will begin registering the first 40 artist spots for their 3rd Annual Fall 2010 Creative & Performing Arts Showcase that will take place between 7pm and midnight on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at The RITZ Ybor located in Tampa, Florida. This event will showcase over 80 local artists, various musicians, dance troupes, fashion designers and more. Square One Creative Events are the LARGEST creative events in the Tampa Bay Area, and won last year's Best of the Bay Award for Best Events (Critics' Pick).

All artistic mediums (photography, paintings, mixed-media, sculpture) are accepted. Artists are free to bring in as many pieces as they desire to fill up a 6x6 to 8x8 space. There are no commissions on any pieces sold, just a standard artist registration fee and a general request that each artist donate at least 10% of their sales to a preferred charity on their own time. This November event's preferred charity is the March of Dimes.

GO: MUG by Bluelucy

SQUARE ONE collaborators and friends, Bluelucy will be hosting the opening reception of their MUG show on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 6pm to 9pm at Kahwa Coffee Roasters located at 204 2nd Ave S in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Bluelucy is the creative partnership of Chad Mize and Phillip Clark. They recently opened their Bluelucy Gallery & Studio which is conveniently located on the much-hyped 600 Block at 653 Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, Florida.

MUG, their new collection of 20 separate paintings (10" x 10") of coffee mugs are each painted on wood panel and created with various mediums such as pencil, acrylic, pastel, enamel and resin.

Their collection will be hanging and for sale at Kahwa Coffee Roasters the entire month of July 2010.

The inspiration for this collection was taking a simple sized wood panel and applying the same size mug shape to each and adding throwback imagery and designs of famous mugs to each. Here is a sample of some of Bluelucy's MUG paintings that will be on display:

SQUARE ONE is very excited about VYB Dance Company's upcoming choreography showcase called THE KANVAS which takes place on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at The RITZ Ybor. If any readers witnessed the magical dance numbers and performances that took place at the spring Square One event, CAMILLE LEONE, then that is just a small tasting of what to expect at their seasonal KANVAS showcase. VYB Dance first wowed the packed house with their eye-popping opening "Bad Romance" number, and then nearly stole the CAMILLE LEONE show with their 12-minute performance of non-stop energy and talent to a medley of Michael Jackson, Janet and Britney Spears.

The man with the plan: Demario Henry

VYB (Voice Your Body) is a collective of the most amazing dancers in the Tampa Bay area who teach weekly classes, perform at various special events in the area and are strong advocates of supporting the community through the arts. Founded and led by the wonderful choreographer / dancer / model / creative genius Demario Henry, VYB hosts these KANVAS events to showcase local talent not just in the area but in Florida. B-boys, b-girls, dancers and entertainers from all over the state come together for one night and for the sole reason to just dance.

VYB is also comprised of the very lovely Dreama Davidson, Limbert Capellan and Romeul Lariosa. VYB not only performed at SQUARE ONE's Camille Leone event, but will also perform at SQUARE ONE's November 13 event at The RITZ Ybor... so save the date!

I am also personally stoked to see Annie DeVaux's latest routine in the air. I couldn't take my eyes off of her performance with Bella Danza at CAMILLE LEONE.

The concept of CAMILLE LEONE is the brainchild of Square One executive director Okesene Tilo. CAMILLE LEONE is a play on the word "chameleon." The entire event will revolve around various interpretations of a woman's identity and appearance by each artist. The event's theme colors are red, gold and green, a reference from the Culture Club song "Karma Chameleon." Guests of the event will be encouraged to wear a mask to the event to go along with the "mysterious identity" theme of the event. Additionally, masks will also be sold at the door. The promotional image for CAMILLE LEONE was shot and designed by Chris Zenger, a resident Square One artist and the creative director for OMG! Magazine.

Ben Chmura will be competing for, among other things, a chance to display his work during New York's Fashion Week.

Tampa fashion designer Ben Chmura will make his national debut on "Project Runway" when the Lifetime fashion series heads back to New York for Season 7 premiering Jan. 14.

The 30-year-old is known locally for his involvement with Sweatshop — a one-night-only multimedia exhibit held over Labor Day weekend at Czar in Ybor City — alongside area tastemakers Nessie Fernandez, Raven Reda and Kamran Mir.

Chmura debuted his fall/winter 2009 collection, Taliesin, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin estate and the eponymous Welsh mythological hero for a retro-futuristic look, at this year's Sweatshop extravaganza.

"This year we didn't hold back," Chmura told the Tribune in September. "I'm just pleased to be a part of something that has such an influence on the community. It's really encouraging."

The arts community has been hit especially hard by the struggling economy, he said, but added that he is sticking to his creative guns.

"It's been tough, there's no two ways about it," said Chmura, who sold his car earlier this year to support his passion. "Its hard, but this is the time to focus. I'm serious about this. It's what I love to do."

"Project Runway" host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn, judges Michael Kors, a leading designer, and Nina Garcia, fashion director for Marie Claire magazine, will be joined by 16 new designers, including Chmura, vying for a shot to make their way to Bryant Park and show their collection in front of top industry insiders during New York Fashion Week.

The winner receives an editorial feature in Marie Claire magazine, the opportunity to sell their line on Bluefly.com, a $50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel to create, design and run their business, and a cash prize of $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris to launch their own fashion line.

Q&A: Jeremy Gloff's 21st Century Love Songs

Tampa singer-songwriter JEREMY GLOFF recently released 21ST CENTURY LOVE SONGS, his 16th studio album and self-described most mature collection of songs at SQUARE ONE's creative extravaganza MAGNUM OPUS held at THE RITZ YBOR last month. Okesene Tilo recently sat down with the Tampa star regarding his new album.

OKESENE TILO: Good Morning Jeremy. First off, THANK YOU for performing at MAGNUM OPUS last November and agreeing to hold your album release party for 21ST CENTURY LOVE SONGS at the event. Describe your experience that night.

JEREMY GLOFF: Surreal. MAGNUM OPUS was one of those nights where it felt like life had been sped up. It felt like one minute I was unloading my gear and then ten minutes later, I was home in bed. I didn't get to see much of the event except for from the stage, but it looked packed and people seemd to be enjoying themselves. I am grateful to SQUARE ONE for giving me the opportunity to perform in front of such a great crowd.

OT: 21ST CENTURY LOVE SONGS has been described as your most mature and grown-up album to date. What changed personally from last year's 1987 album to inspire you to steer in a different direction musically?

JG: My previous album was a 1980s-inspired dance album. At first while promoting that album... I really enjoyed being goofy, zany, and outrageous on stage, but I found myself getting increasingly cynical and observational. I watched our country slip into the worst financial state I've ever seen since I was born. I watched the general public become increasingly numbed and fixated by the internet. I feel like an outsider more than I ever have in my life and this isn't really something I'm enjoying. I think there's a lot of that alienation in this new album. The album is also about love which I think might be dead.

OT: I attended a studio session while you were recording 21ST CENTURY LOVE SONGS, and was impressed by the sizable roster of local talent that came together to help create your record. How did you gather everyone together?

JG: Bascially I made a Tampa musician wish list: I wanted all of my great friends and peers that I respect and enjoy on this album. I made a chart with two columns. One column had the listing of new songs, and the other column had my musician wishlist. I then matched each person to the song I felt belonged to them. I didn't tell anyone what to play in the studio, but instead just sent them demos. They showed up in the studio and poured a piece of themselves into the songs. It really blew my mind.

OT: Track 6 titled COKE & ECSTASY is my favorite song off of your album, but sounds nothing like any other song that you have recorded. How would you describe your sound today?

JG: This new album came out of nowhere without a pre-determinded idea of its style. Although I am not a fan of these bands, I do think there's a melancholy similar to bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and The Smiths. I love The Killers who write great emotional pop songs. I'm a huge Sonic Youth fan which I think some of their soundscapes inspired me this time around. I think this album, more than any before it, draws more on male musician influences than female. I don't think my idols Madonna or Stevie Nicks figure anywhere on this new album.

OT: Currently, you are accepting online requests from fans to perform an acoustic version of any song from your catalog that spans over 16 years via YouTube. What inspired this?

JG: I've been doing this for almost a solid twenty years. I think as an artist I can be stubborn and too forward thinking. During the past year it dawned on me that sure I can be an advice columnist, an Amazon.com reviewer, a flashy public personality, but at the heart of it all... I am a songwriter. And through the years, I think some of these songs I wrote meant something to people. I wanted to give these people a chance to step forward and hear some of the songs they loved again. ..a great way to end a decade.

OT: Now that 21ST CENTURY LOVE SONGS is released, what is next on your calendar for 2010?

JG: Right now I find myself enjoying being at home, reading a lot and watching movies. I find myself angry and disappointed by society. I know I need to shake this reclusiveness if I want to properly promote my new album. I hope to create some music videos to go along with these songs, and to play some shows where I bleed my heart out and do it just for the music again.
